We were funded by Bristol Community Energy Fund to run an Energy Awareness project with our tenants.
A local tutor helped us to run an accredited course in Energy Efficiency for Sustainability.
The interactive course was run by Des Brown from Growing Futures and covered topics including energy sources, renewable and non-renewable energy projects, the impact of our lifestyle on our carbon footprint, energy saving techniques, and information about understanding energy bills. Eight learners attended the course, tenants from six of our houses, and at the end of the course the learners wrote down ways that they will put their new knowledge to use, and how they will share this knowledge in their community.
After the course, one tenant – Ahmed, volunteered to become an Energy Champion and has been using his knowledge of energy and sustainability, along with his Arabic language to engage with tenants in some of our houses.

So far, Ahmed has visited three of houses to speak to the tenants about the importance of saving energy. Using pictures and Arabic posters, he showed tenants how to save energy in the house, for example by closing the windows and turning the heating off when it’s warm enough, by switching off appliances when not in use, and only boiling as much water as is needed. He also used simple energy saving devices such as radiator reflectors to conserve heat in the houses.
We were funded to carry out three energy surveys and Easton Energy Group helped us to carry out CHEESE surveys, (Cold Home Energy Efficiency Survey Experts) with the help of energy champion, Ahmed. Ahmed was able to explain to the tenants in the house why the survey was important, and how the thermal imaging camera worked. As a result of the surveys Ashley Community Housing’s maintenance team is now working on draught proofing the houses and making some changes to keep the house warm.
