Having to plan for your whole future whilst completing exams, coursework and lengthy dissertations can be a huge strain on students, leaving them with little time to stop and think about the small things that can make a big difference. Knowing this, our careers team booked to deliver a ‘Get it Right’ workshop at UWE on the 6th February for the Nigerian Student Society.
The aims of the workshop were to talk students through CVs, interview preparation and graduate schemes. Margz (ACH careers advisor) kicked off the session to a full room of around 30 students. Amongst other great tips, he outlined the 3 Cs which employers are looking for. These are:
Capability: how you handle challenges of the role
Commitment: your attitude towards work
Compatibility: how well you’ll fit into the company’s culture
Helena, also part of the ACH careers team, followed this by giving a talk about grad schemes. This included the benefits and barriers of the schemes, focusing on allowing students to see the range of possibilities for the start of their careers. “Be careful not to fall into the routine process. Try to view each application as the one and if grad schemes don’t feel right to you then don’t do it!” – Helena.
Jeff Greenidge, Director at Himilo, was a guest speaker for the workshop. He inspired many students with his talk on finding your USP and how to brand yourself to stand out.
The workshop concluded with pizza and casual networking where our careers advisors were able to give 1:1 advice to the students.
A big thankyou to the Nigerian Student Network for helping us make this happen. We are pleased to say that going forwards, Margz and Helena will be running a monthly drop-in at UWE, working alongside various student societies, to offer free careers advice.
